About Fair Share

MISSION

Fair Share stands for an America where everyone gets their fair share, does their fair share, and pays their fair share; and where everyone plays by the same rules.

OUR MODEL

We organize people to stand up and take action when the rules are rigged to favor the wealthy and powerful, or when big corporations cheat the system. And, we help elect leaders who will fight for opportunity for all of us to succeed — and help defeat those who stand in the way.

Some updates on our priority campaigns:

Protecting people from surprise medical bills. Until recently one in 5 Americans who visited an emergency room or had surgery got stuck with a surprise medical bill — even if they made sure to go to a hospital in their insurance network. This might have cost them hundreds or even thousands of dollars. But since the federal No Surprises Act went into effect at the start of 2022, the new law has already prevented 1 million surprise medical bills every month. But we still need to win protections from ambulance surprise billing which were excluded from the No Surprises Act. Because 1 out of 2 patients get transported by an out-of-network ambulance, that means patients could face an ambulance surprise bill of hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It's a big problem. We are pressing for state governments and Congress to pass ambulance surprise billing protections.

Expanding broadband connects our entire nation to the internet is key to prosperity and civic engagement for all Americans. The nation has made great strides in connecting citizens to the web. The Biden-Harris administration’s Internet for All initiative is delivering on its promise to connect everyone in America to affordable, reliable high-speed Internet service by 2030. Since the president took office, more than 2.4 million previously unserved homes and small businesses have been connected to high-speed internet service. And just this year, the Biden-Harris administration invested $90 billion to close the digital divide and is administering nearly $50 billion across multiple grant programs. This included making high-speed internet service available to more than 40,000 previously unserved households, nearly 3,000 businesses, and more than 130 community anchor institutions.

Consumer protections from ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ (BNPL) lenders. Before the Great Recession, seven different federal agencies held overlapping responsibilities for protecting consumers in the financial marketplace — and none had consumer protection as its primary mission. That changed in 2010 with passage of the Dodd-Frank bill and the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Consumers rushed to the CFPB’s online complaint portal, filing more than 6 million consumer complaints since then. The CFPB has provided nearly $20 billion in relief to wronged consumers and taken more than 350 enforcement actions against companies that broke the law. This year, the CFPB issued a rule classifying ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ (BNPL) lenders as credit card providers that must follow some rules that apply to credit cards. This will give consumers legal protections including the right to dispute charges, easily get a refund directly from the lender for a returned item, and get billing statements.
